How to Become MCS Accredited

As the UK aims for net zero by 2050. and more of us look to reduce our energy bills with greener solutions, never have installers been in greater demand. In fact, with such an ambitious target set by the government, the role of the renewable heating installer is paramount.

In particular, with air source heat pump installers some of the most requested, it’s the perfect time for those working in this industry to consider becoming MCS certified.

Here, the Energy Efficiency team at City Plumbing looks at the MCS accreditation scheme and highlights the benefits of becoming certified.

Who is MCS?

MCS is a standards organisation that was established in 2007. Otherwise known as the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, it ensures all companies and installers upheld standards for the best practice and quality of installations regarding energy-efficient products.

Initially beginning its life as part of the UK government's business section, MCS has grown to become a renowned source of data and information regarding renewable energy and heating providers and installers.

What Does It Mean to Be MCS Accredited?

Whenever you research anything related to renewable heating systems, you’ll no doubt encounter MCS. This is because when installing solutions like heat pumps, and solar PV, there is an MCS standard required for both the product and the installation process.

The MCS mark is a guarantee of installation to the highest standards, offering homeowners and businesses the confidence needed when opting for energy-saving solutions.

When choosing an MCS-accredited installer, you’ll be assured they’ve been rigorously assessed and are therefore competent to deliver on quality, every time. Independently assessed by certification bodies to determine their compliance, an MCS installer will have the relevant certification to prove this.

Ultimately, with the ruling that only an MCS installer can install MCS certified products, this accreditation ensures that all products are installed to the highest level of safety.

How Do I Become MCS Accredited?

Now you're aware of the importance of MCS, four elements are essential to becoming an MCS-certified installer, including:

1. A Commitment to Quality Workmanship

The MCS 001 Standard, and the specific technology you want to become certified for, are what you’ll be assessed against. This process will be undertaken by bodies that support MCS certification and operate within the ISO/IEC17065 accreditation framework.

You will need to contact one of these approved bodies and make an application to them requesting to become MCS certified. They will be able to further advise on application timeframes and all fees required.

The five bodies that provide MCS accreditation include:

2. A Commitment to Customer Care

It’s mandatory that all MCS contractors belong to a TSI (Trading Standard Institute) approved Consumer Code. So, you will need to be or become a member of either the HIES (Home Insulation & Energy Systems Quality Assured Contractors Scheme) or RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code).

As a member of either of these TSIs, you’ll be able to show a commitment to compliance with the Consumers Code, while demonstrating trust when working under the MCS umbrella.

3. A Demonstration of Competency

To become MCS certified, installers will need to demonstrate their competency, skills, and experience when dealing with their preferred systems. This will be required via qualifications held or short courses attended that are up-to-date, as well as proof in the form or experience. A list of the courses and qualifications accepted by MCS-certified bodies can be found here

4. A Commitment to Continual Improvement

MCS requires all installers looking for MCS accreditation to complete and demonstrate a QMS (Quality Management System). This is where all your documentation required to comply with MCS standards and Consumer Codes will be located. This should then be maintained and updated accordingly, ensuring it's kept complete and therefore effective for future reference.
