A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO FUTURE PROOFING YOUR BUSINESS

The world is changing fast. By 2025 there will be no more gas boilers installed in new builds and by 2030 nearly all our current heating systems will be obsolete. So, how will your business survive and thrive? Our quick guide will set you on the right path.
Why do I need to re-train?
Boris Johnson has described the changes coming to the heating sector as ‘the next Industrial Revolution’. New laws and new net zero targets mean the heating industry will change dramatically over the coming years. Heating installers who upskill now will be in a stronger position to take advantage of this expanding market. While for installers with an electrical background, it’s the ideal time to get involved in Solar PV installations and the electric vehicle charging market with the sale of new diesel and petrol cars set to be banned from 2030.
What are the new legislations?
The government is already committed to improved standards of energy efficiency across the board, from the banning of gas boilers in new homes to the legal requirement for every new build to feature an EV Charge Point. Key legislation includes the £450m Boiler Upgrade Scheme which comes into effect in England and Wales from April 2022 and offers householders a £5k grant towards an Air Source Heat Pump installation or £6k towards a ground source heat pump. A similar scheme will operate in Scotland. Talk to our energy efficiency experts on how and when the legislation will affect your business.

Accredited Renewable Training Courses

Not sure where to start? Lots of installers are at the start of this journey, we at City Plumbing have partnered with GTEC training.
What energy efficient technologies should I know about?
There’s a huge range of energy efficient products, from Ground Source Heat Pumps to EV Charge Points. And it’s growing fast. So, which products are the best value, and which are the best suited for your job? Our energy efficiency experts are happy to advise you.
Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps

Extracts the heat from the air and converts it into usable heat energy for heating systems and hot water.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps circulate water and glycol through pipe loops buried underground to extract heat for use in the property.

Underfloor Heating

Underfloor Heating

More energy efficient than traditional radiators they can work with either Water or Electric systems to deliver a low maintenance heat source.

Waste Water Heat Recovery Systems

Waste Water Heat Recovery Systems

Uses the residual heat from the waste shower water to preheat the incoming cold feed that refills the system.

Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Like Solar Thermal, energy from the sun is absorbed by panels but is then converted into electrical energy.

Solar Thermal Panels

Solar Thermal Panels

Flat panels or evacuated tubes harness the energy from the sun to create hot water.

Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery System

Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery System

Extremely efficient as they extract stale, moist air from the property and resupply it with fresh, pre-heated/cooled, filtered air.

Biomass Boilers

Biomass Boilers

Similar to conventional boilers but rather than burning fossil fuels, biomass boilers burn natural fuel sources to provide the heat for a property’s heating systems and hot water circuits.

EV Charge Points

EV Charge Points

With the government legislating that every new build will have an EV charge point from 2022 we offer a huge range of public and domestic charge points for all types of use.

Where can I get trained?
There are various training options available to installers, ranging from our own bespoke training to private training providers, colleges and manufacturers. It all depends on the level of training you require. Our Energy Efficiency team are well versed in the requirements for installers and can help you find the best route to suit your business. They can also advise on the various funding options across the UK, designed to aid the transition to low carbon heating and make it affordable.
What certification will I need?
Installers looking to access Domestic RHI, or the coming Boiler Upgrade Scheme would require MCS Certification and membership of RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code). Our Energy Efficiency team can advise on this process, but the key elements required are a compliant Quality Management System, recognised training in your chosen technologies (e.g. BPEC or Logic) and a pilot installation which your chosen accreditation body can assess.
Applicants must also hold recognised trade qualifications in plumbing & heating alongside water bylaws, G3 (unvented) regulations and Energy Efficiency.
